Fitting a second-hand ECU, TCU or module: why it needs cloning
Buying a used ECU, gearbox controller or body module is a cheap way round a failed unit — but it usually won't work straight away. Here's why, and what fixes it.
Why a used unit won't just work
- Modules carry the identity of the car they came from: VIN, immobiliser data, coding and learned values.
- Your car's other modules and keys don't recognise the stranger, so the engine won't start or the module stays in a fault state.
What cloning does
- We read the memory of your original unit and write it into the used one, so it becomes a copy of your original.
- The donor must have the same part number (and hardware version) as your original.
- In most cases the car then works without dealer programming. Some gearboxes need adaptations run afterwards.
Before you buy a donor
- Match the full part number on the label, not just the car model.
- Send us photos of both labels before you post — we'll confirm they match.
Questions
What if my original is completely dead?
The data can often still be read, sometimes directly from the memory chip. Send a photo and we'll advise.
Need it checked?
Send your part number and a label photo — we'll tell you whether it's a repair or a clone, and the price, before you post.
